xAI launches Build Mode, letting Grok build and publish apps from a chat prompt

xAI introduced Build Mode on July 28, 2026, a new feature inside Grok that turns a plain-language description into a working, publishable app, game, website, or dashboard without the user writing or touching any code.

What's new

Build Mode is live today in Early Beta, gated to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers on the web, iOS, and Android. Users select "Build" from Grok's mode switcher, describe what they want, and Grok writes the code and renders a working preview directly inside the chat. As xAI puts it: "Tell Grok an idea, and it builds a working version live in your chat, on the web or your phone." From there, users can keep iterating conversationally — changing the layout, adding a feature, or restyling the result — without needing to configure anything or look at the underlying code.

xAI highlights four categories of things people are building with it: websites (landing pages, portfolios, business sites), functional apps (planners, trackers, calculators, simulations, internal utilities), games (arcade racers, puzzles, interactive 3D worlds), and interactive dashboards that can pull in live data through connectors. Finished projects publish to a shareable grok.me link, or to a custom domain the user owns.

Context

Build Mode is distinct from Grok Build, the agentic coding CLI and grok-build-0.1 API model xAI shipped separately for developers, which targets plan-mode, parallel-subagent coding workflows rather than conversational, no-code app creation. Build Mode instead puts xAI squarely into the fast-growing "prompt-to-app" category alongside tools like Vercel's v0, Replit, Lovable, and Bolt, where the target user is a non-developer who wants a working tool or site without touching a codebase. Gating the beta behind the SuperGrok Heavy tier signals xAI is using the feature, at least initially, as a premium-subscription differentiator rather than a free-tier growth play.

Why it matters

Build Mode lowers the barrier to producing custom software to little more than describing what you want, extending Grok's reach from a chat assistant into a lightweight app-creation platform — territory currently being contested by several well-funded competitors. The ability to publish directly to a shareable link or a custom domain, with no separate hosting or deployment step, removes much of the remaining friction between an idea and a live, shareable product. For xAI, it's also a distribution play: every app built and shared via a grok.me link is a visible demonstration of what Grok can do, placed in front of people who never opened the chat interface themselves.
