Stripe agrees to acquire AI model gateway OpenRouter for over $7 billion
Stripe agreed on August 19 to acquire OpenRouter, the AI model routing platform used by developers to access hundreds of models from dozens of providers through a single API, in a deal reported at more than $7 billion.
What's new
OpenRouter has built a platform that helps businesses dynamically evaluate each request and route it to the optimal model based on task complexity, price, speed, and reliability; Stripe says the platform is already used by companies including NVIDIA, Zoom, and Lovable. OpenRouter separately says it now processes more than 10 trillion tokens per day across 400-plus models for a community of more than 10 million developers and companies. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison framed the deal around token economics, saying tokens are becoming the central currency for companies building with AI and that real-world economic value will depend on making good use of scarce compute resources. OpenRouter co-founder and CEO Alex Atallah said the company will continue to operate as it does today — same mission, same name, same product, same roadmap.
The deal caps a fast run for OpenRouter, which raised a $113 million Series B in May 2026 at a $1.3 billion valuation; the reported $7 billion-plus price is more than five times that valuation just three months later.
Context
OpenRouter has positioned itself since its 2023 founding as a neutral routing layer in a market where no single foundation model wins every task, letting developers switch between OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and open-weight models without rebuilding their integration each time. Stripe's acquisition extends its existing economic-infrastructure business — payments, billing, and now compute-cost optimization — into the AI stack directly, rather than just processing the payments AI companies collect from their customers.
Why it matters
A payments infrastructure company buying the leading multi-model routing layer signals that model routing and token-cost optimization are being treated as core financial infrastructure for AI-native businesses, not just a developer convenience. It also hands Stripe visibility into token flow across most of the frontier and open-weight model ecosystem at once — a vantage point no single model provider has on its own competitors.
