SpaceX completes $60 billion acquisition of Cursor maker Anysphere
SpaceX has closed its $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind the AI coding tool Cursor, folding one of the fastest-growing software companies in history into the SpaceXAI/xAI ecosystem.
What's new
Cursor confirmed the deal was done in a company blog post on August 14, 2026: "Cursor has officially been acquired by SpaceX. This completes the acquisition process that started in April, when we announced our partnership with SpaceXAI to accelerate our model training efforts."
The closing follows a formal agreement SpaceX signed on June 16, 2026 to acquire Anysphere for $60 billion in stock — days after SpaceX's own Nasdaq debut, and by most counts the largest acquisition of a venture-backed startup on record. Cursor now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary, giving it access to SpaceX's compute infrastructure, including the Colossus supercomputer cluster that also underpins xAI's Grok models.
The timing is notable: Cursor's own blog post points to Grok 4.6 — released just one day before the deal closed — as an early product of the combined engineering effort, describing it as an early look at what the two teams can build together.
Context
Cursor built its business on being model-agnostic, plugging into OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google models inside a single coding assistant, and reportedly crossed $2 billion in annualized revenue earlier this year — a pace few enterprise software companies have matched. That neutrality is now in tension with new ownership: Cursor is part of the same corporate family as xAI's Grok line, even as it continues to route requests to competing labs' models for its users.
The deal also caps a fast-moving few months for SpaceXAI. xAI was absorbed into SpaceX earlier in 2026, and the company has been assembling coding and developer-tool capability alongside its core model work — the April partnership with Cursor on model training was the first visible step toward this acquisition.
Why it matters
This is a consolidation move, not just a funding round: an AI coding tool with tens of millions of developer-facing seats is now inside the same corporate structure as a frontier model lab and a company with some of the largest GPU clusters on the planet. That puts SpaceXAI/xAI in more direct competition with Microsoft (GitHub Copilot), Google (Gemini Code Assist), and Anthropic (Claude Code) — each of which pairs a coding tool with an in-house model.
For Cursor's existing customers, the near-term product story is compute: cheaper, more capable models funded by SpaceX-scale infrastructure. The longer-term question is whether Cursor keeps its multi-model neutrality or increasingly steers users toward Grok, a tension every acquired "neutral" tool in this cycle eventually has to resolve.
