Runway signs strategic partnership with Japan's MIXI, citing 21-day-to-3-day video turnaround
Runway has struck an enterprise partnership with MIXI, the Japanese gaming and entertainment company behind the long-running mobile hit Monster Strike, folding Runway's video-generation tools into MIXI's production pipeline across gaming, sports, lifestyle, and entertainment.
What's new
MIXI is best known for Monster Strike, a mobile game that has run for more than a decade and built a global user base of over 65 million, spinning off anime and other media along the way; the company also runs FamilyAlbum, a family photo-sharing app with more than 30 million users. Under the partnership, MIXI has already put Runway to work across several production tasks, and both companies say they'll expand into new use cases in gaming, animation, and interactive experiences.
The numbers MIXI is citing are the headline here: a video production for the Traditional Chinese version of Monster Strike that used to take 21 days was completed in 3, entirely in-house; a brand film that mixed live-action and generative video went from a 20-day schedule to 7; and visual proposals for character animation, in-app effects, and screen transitions — work that previously took several days — now come together in about five minutes. MIXI's director put it plainly: "Runway now sits at the heart of our creative production workflow." Runway co-CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela added: "The speed at which many creators across MIXI's businesses have adopted Runway is incredible."
Context
The deal follows Runway's broader push into Japan: the company has opened a Tokyo headquarters, committed an initial $40 million to building out its presence there, and hired a dedicated head of Japan operations. Runway describes Japan as one of its fastest-growing markets, citing 300% year-over-year enterprise customer growth in the country and roughly a third of its total Asia sales volume — context Runway offered directly: "Japan has been one of our fastest-growing markets." MIXI joins a growing list of entertainment-industry Runway partners that has also included Lionsgate, putting gaming and mobile entertainment alongside film studios as a customer segment the company is actively courting.
Why it matters
The specific before/after production numbers — 21 days to 3, 20 days to 7, days down to minutes — are a more concrete efficiency claim than most AI-video partnership announcements offer, and they come from a company with a decade-old franchise and tens of millions of existing users rather than a green-field pilot. For Runway, landing a large, established Japanese gaming and media company as a reference customer, backed by real production-timeline numbers, strengthens its pitch to other studios and games companies weighing whether generative video tools are ready for actual production pipelines rather than pre-viz or marketing experiments.
