Replit launches Free Mode powered by OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Luna

Replit and OpenAI announced a partnership putting GPT-5.6 Luna behind a new Free Mode on Replit, letting users build applications and agents on the platform without consuming paid usage — a move both companies frame as a step toward making software creation accessible to non-technical users at scale.

Free Mode gives Replit users coding suggestions, feedback, and analysis powered by GPT-5.6 Luna at no cost, while preserving full project context so builders can ideate and plan before shipping, then step up to more advanced reasoning models when a task demands it. Replit co-founder and CEO Amjad Masad said the tier is a first for the platform: "For the first time, you'll get access to an amazing experience where you can build applications, build agents, build all sorts of software in Free Mode." He credited OpenAI's recent pricing moves directly: "Thanks to OpenAI and the price cuts that you made recently, you made it possible for us to offer it to millions of users in Free Mode." OpenAI CEO Sam Altman framed the ambition more broadly, saying the goal is a world where "anyone with access to the internet can build a product, build a startup, and just kind of get started and going," which he predicted could fuel "another renaissance-level entrepreneurial boom like we've never seen before."

Context

The partnership follows OpenAI's recent 80 percent price cut on GPT-5.6 Luna and the rollout of Fast mode into the API — moves that lowered the marginal cost of serving a model capable coding assistant closely enough that Replit says it can now extend that capability to millions of free-tier users rather than gating it behind a paid plan. Luna is OpenAI's lower-cost tier in the GPT-5.6 family, positioned opposite the higher-capability GPT-5.6 Sol, and this is one of the more visible third-party deployments of it at consumer scale since the price cut.

Why it matters

Free, agent-capable coding tools lower the barrier to software creation for people without engineering backgrounds, and Replit's bet is that subsidized access converts into a much larger funnel toward its paid tiers as projects grow in complexity.
