OpenAI says its models now reach more than one billion active users
OpenAI disclosed Friday that its models now reach more than one billion active users and more than two million businesses, one of the company's most specific public statements yet about the scale of its user base, in a blog post framing that growth as central to its business strategy.
What's new
In a post titled "Building abundant intelligence," OpenAI states plainly: "Our models now reach more than one billion active users and more than two million businesses." The company also shared behavioral data on how usage deepens over time: "Six months after signing up, people send roughly 50 percent more messages each day and use ChatGPT for about twice as many kinds of work."
OpenAI also disclosed how far agentic usage has spread inside its own operations, saying that "across OpenAI, agentic work through Codex now accounts for 99.8% of weekly output tokens," citing its Finance team as one group that has made agentic tools central to its workflow. The company frames ChatGPT Work as shifting the product's role "from answering questions to completing complex, multistep work -- 'asking' to 'doing.'"
The post ties this growth directly to pricing changes OpenAI announced a day earlier: an 80 percent price cut for GPT-5.6 Luna and a 20 percent cut for GPT-5.6 Terra, plus a new "Fast mode" for GPT-5.6 Sol that OpenAI says "delivers up to 2.5 times the speed of standard processing at twice the price, with no change in intelligence."
Context
The billion-user figure lands the week after OpenAI cut prices across its GPT-5.6 lineup and detailed engineering work -- including using GPT-5.6 Sol itself to optimize the software that serves its own models -- that it says cut end-to-end serving costs by 20 percent and improved token-generation efficiency by more than 15 percent. OpenAI has periodically disclosed user-count milestones in the past as ChatGPT scaled, but this is among its most explicit combined statements of both consumer reach (over one billion active users) and enterprise penetration (over two million businesses) in a single disclosure.
The company explicitly links the two: cheaper, faster models expand the range of work worth automating, which OpenAI argues drives adoption, which in turn funds further research and infrastructure investment -- a loop it describes as "the economics of abundance."
Why it matters
A figure north of one billion active users, if it holds up to scrutiny, would put ChatGPT's reach in the same conversation as the largest consumer software platforms, a scale few AI products have publicly claimed to date. Pairing that with two million businesses signals OpenAI sees enterprise adoption, not just consumer chat volume, as a primary growth engine going into the second half of 2026.
The 99.8% figure for agentic Codex usage inside OpenAI's own weekly output tokens is also a striking internal data point: it suggests the company's own operations have shifted almost entirely from direct chat interactions to agent-driven, multistep task execution, a pattern OpenAI is clearly positioning as the template it expects enterprise customers to follow as agentic tools mature across the industry.
