OpenAI pauses new sign-ups and upgrades to its $200/month ChatGPT Pro plan

OpenAI has temporarily stopped accepting new subscribers and upgrades to ChatGPT Pro's top $200-per-month tier, according to the company's own support documentation. The freeze affects only new sign-ups and upgrades from lower tiers; customers already on the $200 plan keep their access uninterrupted.

OpenAI's help center article on ChatGPT Pro tiers states: "As of September 10, 2026, we're temporarily pausing new sign-ups and upgrades to the ChatGPT Pro $200 plan (Pro 20X)." The pause blocks new subscriptions and upgrades originating from the Free, Go, Plus, or Pro $100 tiers. Existing Pro $200 subscribers are unaffected, and new or existing Pro $100 subscriptions continue to be sold normally.

OpenAI has not published a public reason for the pause. The company has not given a date for when new sign-ups will resume, and the notice is framed as temporary rather than a permanent tier retirement.

Context

ChatGPT Pro launched as OpenAI's premium consumer tier, sitting above the $20 Plus plan and a mid-tier $100 option, aimed at heavy users of the company's most capable reasoning and agentic models. OpenAI has been rapidly iterating on its model lineup this quarter — shipping GPT-6 Astra, GPT-Live 1, and new image models in quick succession — while also disclosing capacity and infrastructure strain elsewhere in its stack, including a rewrite of ChatGPT's storage platform to keep pace with more than a billion weekly users.

Pausing new sign-ups to a top-of-line consumer plan, rather than a developer API product, is unusual for OpenAI, which has generally pushed to expand paid tiers rather than restrict them.

Why it matters

A sign-up pause on the highest consumer tier is consistent with either a compute capacity constraint — throttling demand for the plan that grants the most generous usage of OpenAI's priciest models — or an internal repricing/repackaging effort ahead of a relaunch. Given OpenAI's recent public statements about the cost and safety tradeoffs of scaling capacity, and given that Pro-tier users typically consume the most compute per seat, a capacity-driven pause is the more likely read.
