OpenAI commits $5 million to independent research on AI and teen development

OpenAI is funding a new grant program aimed at independent researchers studying how generative AI affects teenagers. On its announcement page, the company states: "OpenAI is committing $5 million to support independent research on how generative AI affects the lives and development of young people ages 13–17."

The program, funded and administered by OpenAI Group PBC, will award individual grants of up to $1 million against a total program cap of $5 million. Applicants must be affiliated with a research institution or organization and have relevant experience in child or adolescent development, wellbeing, human-computer interaction, or AI impacts. Submitted proposals require a project summary, a research plan capped at three pages, a project timeline, a budget justification, a statement of dependencies, an ethics statement, team information, and a conflicts-of-interest disclosure. Submissions opened immediately and close October 6, 2026.

Context

The grant sits alongside a string of other OpenAI initiatives announced the same day — including funding for AI-and-mental-health research and continued support for journalism partnerships — as the company faces sustained scrutiny over how its consumer products affect younger users.
