OpenAI brings ChatGPT ads to India's Free and Go tiers
OpenAI will begin showing advertisements to ChatGPT users on its Free and Go subscription tiers in India, extending its ads business to one of the app's largest markets.
What's new
The rollout starts with roughly 50 brand partners, according to OpenAI, with a self-serve ad manager for marketers arriving next month. Advertisers will be able to run campaigns with a minimum daily budget of ₹725 (about $7.60), a price point aimed at drawing in small and mid-sized Indian businesses alongside larger advertisers.
Dave Dugan, OpenAI's head of global ads solutions, framed the feature around timing rather than interruption: "With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape." The ads will appear only on the Free and Go tiers — OpenAI's paid Plus, Pro, and Business tiers remain ad-free.
Context
India is ChatGPT's largest market by user count, and OpenAI has been steadily building out a global ads business over the past several weeks, previously expanding ChatGPT Ads to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. The India launch follows the same playbook: start with a curated group of brand partners, then open up self-serve tools for broader advertiser access.
OpenAI's Go tier — a low-cost subscription positioned between the free tier and Plus — was built in part to expand ChatGPT's reach in price-sensitive markets like India, making it a natural target for the company's ad-supported monetization push.
Why it matters
Advertising gives OpenAI a second revenue stream from users who won't pay for a subscription, which matters most in markets like India where price sensitivity limits Plus and Pro conversion. Rolling ads into the Free and Go tiers first, rather than the paid tiers, suggests OpenAI is treating ads as a way to monetize its largest free user base rather than a feature it expects paying subscribers to tolerate. As the ad manager opens to self-serve advertisers next month, the real test will be whether small Indian businesses adopt it at the scale OpenAI needs to make the initiative meaningful alongside subscription revenue.
