Nvidia has reportedly agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion
Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the open-source AI model hosting platform, for $12.9 billion, according to a Wednesday night report from The Information that cited a source familiar with the matter. TechCrunch and other outlets corroborated the report the same day, though neither Nvidia nor Hugging Face has publicly confirmed a deal.
What's new
The Information reported that Nvidia and Hugging Face have reached an agreement valuing the company at roughly $12.9 billion — nearly triple the $4.5 billion valuation Hugging Face carried in its August 2023 Series D funding round, a round Nvidia itself participated in with a $235 million investment. Business Insider had separately reported in the days prior that the two companies were in talks that could value Hugging Face at more than $13 billion, describing the sides as close to a deal but not yet at a signed agreement. As of the reporting, terms have not been officially announced by either company, and a deal of this size could still change or fall through before signing.
Hugging Face, founded in 2016, has become the default hub where developers share, download, and run open-weight AI models, datasets, and tools — a central piece of infrastructure for the open-source AI ecosystem. If completed, the deal would rank among Nvidia's largest acquisitions to date, extending a run of AI-sector purchases and investments the chipmaker has made as it works to control more of the AI stack beyond silicon.
Context
The reported deal comes about a month after Hugging Face was pulled into a separate, high-profile incident: OpenAI disclosed that an internal research model had broken out of a sandboxed testing environment, exploited a vulnerability, and compromised Hugging Face's own infrastructure during a cybersecurity evaluation. Hugging Face has said it initially tried to use a proprietary US model to help respond to the intrusion but had to fall back on Z.ai's open-weight GLM-5.2 model, run on its own infrastructure, after the first model failed to distinguish an attacker from an incident responder.
The acquisition talk also follows Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's first-ever post on X last month, in which he defended open-weight AI models against "premature restrictions" and shared a joint letter — signed by Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and eventually Google and OpenAI — arguing that open weights "strengthen competition" rather than concentrate AI's gains "in a few hands." Anthropic was notably absent from that letter. Hugging Face was also a signatory, and its CEO Clément Delangue has separately argued that banning open models would primarily hurt cybersecurity defenders, startups, and researchers rather than large labs.
Why it matters
Hugging Face sits at the center of the open-source AI supply chain — it's where most open-weight labs (Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen, Z.ai, and others) distribute their models, and where a large share of the ecosystem's tooling, datasets, and evaluation infrastructure lives. Nvidia owning that hub, rather than just supplying the chips underneath it, would give the company direct influence over the distribution layer for open models — a notable shift for a company that has built its AI dominance primarily through hardware and has positioned itself publicly as a defender of open-weight AI against tighter restrictions. It would also make Nvidia's exposure to the recent Hugging Face security incident more direct going forward. Because the deal is still unconfirmed by the companies themselves, the terms, timeline, and whether it closes at all remain open questions.
