Mistral raises €3 billion Series D at a €21 billion valuation
Mistral AI has closed a €3 billion Series D funding round at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion, which the company says is the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. The round comes three years after Mistral's launch and cements its position as Europe's best-funded AI lab.
What's new
Samsung Electronics led the round, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing investor PSG Equity. New investors include Advent, funds managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. A long list of existing backers also participated, including a16z, ASML, NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, DST Global, and several European institutions such as Bpifrance, BNP Paribas CIB, and Belfius.
Mistral says the capital will go toward:
- Expanding frontier research capabilities
- Scaling compute capacity for training larger models
- Growing infrastructure footprint
- Accelerating commercial growth and international expansion across the 20 countries where it currently operates
The round more than doubles Mistral's previous valuation and is explicitly framed around "sovereign" AI — open-weight models built and trained outside the two dominant US and Chinese ecosystems.
Context
Mistral has spent 2026 pushing hard on the sovereign-AI positioning, including its European Compute Units initiative announced earlier this year to secure up to 1 GW of AI compute capacity by 2030. Where OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have raised capital largely from US investors and hyperscalers, Mistral's cap table now includes European industrial and sovereign-wealth participants (Luxembourg, Bpifrance) alongside US strategics like NVIDIA and Salesforce Ventures, plus Samsung as the new lead.
The round also arrives amid intensifying competition in open-weight models from Chinese labs (DeepSeek, Qwen, Z.ai) and continued frontier spending by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, all of which have announced multi-billion-dollar compute commitments in recent months.
Why it matters
A €21 billion valuation puts Mistral in the same financial tier as mid-sized frontier labs globally, giving it the balance sheet to compete on training compute even though it remains a fraction of the size of OpenAI or Anthropic by revenue. The composition of the round — Samsung as lead, a Luxembourg sovereign vehicle, and continued NVIDIA participation — signals that "sovereign AI" is becoming an investable thesis in its own right, not just a policy talking point. For European enterprises and governments wary of depending entirely on US infrastructure, a well-capitalized Mistral offers a credible open-weight alternative with committed long-term backing.
