Midjourney pivots to medical imaging hardware with a 60-second full-body ultrasonic scanner, launching a new Midjourney Medical division
Midjourney, known until now exclusively for AI-generated images, unveiled its first hardware product on June 18, 2026: a full-body ultrasonic scanner capable of producing a complete 3D body map in under 60 seconds. The announcement marks a striking pivot for the company and introduces a new division, Midjourney Medical, focused on diagnostic imaging.
What was announced
The Midjourney Scanner lowers a person on a platform into a shallow pool of water at 2 inches per second, passing them through a ring of approximately half a million ultrasonic emitters the size of sand grains. The emitters fire sound waves through the body from every angle, and a compute cluster reconstructs the returning waves into cross-sectional 3D images of muscle, fat, bone, and organs accurate to fractions of a millimeter.
The result, the company claims, is a scan that runs "nearly a hundred times" faster than traditional MRI — under 60 seconds versus the 60–90 minutes an MRI typically requires. Midjourney framed the ambition broadly: "We've dreamed of something as powerful as MRI, and as casual as a trip to the spa, and we're unveiling a path to that – today."
The underlying sensor technology is built on a co-development and exclusive licensing agreement with Butterfly Network, a medical ultrasound company known for its ultrasound-on-chip platform. The prototype incorporates 40 Butterfly Ultrasound-on-Chip modules. Butterfly disclosed the terms of the deal — worth up to $74 million over five years — in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in November 2025.
Context
Midjourney is bootstrapped and profitable, unlike most frontier AI labs. The company has never disclosed revenue but has generated substantial cash from its image generation subscription business. David Holz, its founder, has spoken publicly about building Midjourney as a long-duration company rather than a venture-backed operation targeting a near-term exit.
The scanner carries no FDA clearance for diagnostic use. Midjourney says it will begin by offering body-composition maps, which do not require FDA clearance, and will seek regulatory approval for further diagnostic capabilities over time. The first Midjourney Spa — a 25,000-square-foot facility in San Francisco's Union Square featuring saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs, and scanner bays — is planned to open in 2027, targeting 50,000 installed scanners worldwide by 2031.
Why it matters
The pivot is unexpected on its surface: an AI image generation company moving into hardware medical imaging is an unusual strategic move. The connection is computational. Midjourney's core capability is generating coherent visual representations from incomplete or noisy input — the same underlying challenge that Ultrasonic CT poses when reconstructing 3D anatomy from millions of intersecting sound waves. The company is betting that its AI can perform volumetric reconstruction better than conventional signal-processing approaches.
Midjourney made the economic argument explicit: "We think it's completely possible that with enough early imaging in the future, the world could avoid 30 percent of all deaths and 50 percent of all healthcare costs." Whether or not that claim holds under clinical scrutiny, the company is entering a market where imaging access is a significant bottleneck — current MRI machines cost $1 million to $3 million each and require specialized facilities. A faster, cheaper, non-magnetic scanner that could operate in wellness-spa environments represents a fundamentally different distribution model for full-body imaging.
