Gemini Notebook adds Expert Intelligence, grounding answers in purchased ebooks

Google added a feature called Expert Intelligence to Gemini Notebook on August 27, 2026, letting users pull select ebooks they've bought from Google Play Books directly into a notebook so the AI's answers are grounded in that specific text.

In its announcement, Google described the feature this way: "Expert Intelligence lets you incorporate insights from leading authors, publications, and domain experts, including from titles you've purchased, directly into Gemini Notebook." The company added: "You can now add select ebooks you've purchased from Google Play Books directly to a Gemini Notebook. This makes it simple for you to ask questions about the book and receive responses grounded directly in that book."

Beyond direct Q&A, Google says the feature extends to Gemini Notebook's existing output formats: "You can also use Gemini Notebook to help you understand books in new ways, for example, by generating Infographics, Audio Overviews, Quizzes, or more from the book." That means a purchased ebook can now feed the same generation tools Gemini Notebook already offers for uploaded documents and web sources — turning a static book into source material for study aids, summaries, and audio-format overviews.

The feature is scoped to "select" titles rather than a user's entire Play Books library, suggesting Google is starting with a limited catalog of publisher-approved books rather than opening every purchased ebook to ingestion on day one.
