Gemini app for macOS adds Fn-key voice dictation, summarization, and rewriting

Google has added a new voice-driven natural-language mode to the Gemini app for macOS, letting users dictate, summarize, and rewrite text in any desktop application by holding a single key.

What's new

Holding the Fn key now activates Gemini system-wide on macOS. According to Google, the feature enables:

• Intelligent dictation — transcribes speech into clean, polished text, automatically stripping filler words ("ums" and "ahs"), catching and correcting mid-sentence mistakes, and dropping the finished text directly at the cursor
• Content extraction and summarization — can read and summarize files or documents visible on screen
• Rewriting and image generation/editing — text can be rewritten, and images generated or edited, via voice command

The feature is rolling out globally to all Gemini app for macOS users in English, with additional languages planned for future release.

Context

This is a system-level integration rather than a chat-window feature — it works inside whatever app is focused on screen, positioning Gemini as an ambient dictation and editing layer for the Mac rather than a separate destination app. It follows Google's broader push to embed Gemini directly into the operating-system layer on both desktop and mobile, alongside earlier moves like native computer-use automation in Gemini 3.5 Flash.

Why it matters

Voice dictation tools have existed on macOS for years, but pairing transcription with on-the-fly cleanup (removing filler, fixing corrections) and in-context actions (summarizing what's on screen, rewriting text, editing images) turns a single keystroke into a general-purpose assistant trigger. For Google, embedding this at the OS input layer — rather than behind a chat window — is a bid to make Gemini the default way Mac users interact with AI day-to-day, ahead of similar ambient-assistant pushes from Apple and Microsoft.
