Fidji Simo steps down as OpenAI's CEO of Applications, will transition to advisor

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications and the company's second-highest-ranking executive, announced on July 9, 2026 that she is stepping back from her full-time role to focus on recovering from a chronic illness, transitioning instead to a part-time advisory position.

Reporting elsewhere identified the condition as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which Simo has managed since 2019.

Simo's role at OpenAI was itself a signal of how central it had become to the company's strategy: "Simo joined OpenAI in May 2025 as CEO of Applications, then a newly created role reporting directly to Sam Altman that consolidated the company's business and product operations." That mandate covered ChatGPT's consumer and enterprise product lines as well as OpenAI's commercial operations — effectively the entire revenue-facing half of the company, distinct from the research organization.

No single formal successor has been named. With Simo on leave since April, Greg Brockman had already been overseeing product strategy in her absence, and reporting suggests Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser could take on an expanded role going forward; OpenAI has not announced a permanent restructuring of the CEO of Applications position.

Simo joined OpenAI from Instacart, where she was CEO, in one of the highest-profile outside hires in the company's history — brought in specifically to professionalize OpenAI's product and business operations as ChatGPT scaled into a mass-market consumer product with enterprise ambitions.
