Chris Malone, OpenAI's head of data centers, departs after 16 months as executive exits mount
Chris Malone, who led OpenAI's data center organization, has left the company, adding to a wave of senior executive departures at OpenAI this year.
What's new
Per TechCrunch's reporting, "Chris Malone, OpenAI's former head of data centers, left the company last week." Malone had joined OpenAI in March of the prior year after nearly five years at Meta and more than a decade at Google, putting his tenure at roughly 16 months. His exit follows a recent internal reorganization: OpenAI said it had "recently reorganized" its "infrastructure organization to support the scale and pace of our work," after which Malone stopped reporting directly to OpenAI president Greg Brockman and began reporting to OpenAI vice president Sachin Katti.
OpenAI's data center leadership is now split across several other executives, including Uday Ruddarraju, who leads the data center team; Brent Mayo, who leads the data center build and delivery program; and Spas Lazarov, who leads data center engineering.
Context
Malone joined OpenAI shortly after the launch of the Stargate Project, the roughly $500 billion data center buildout effort tied to the Trump administration. His departure is one of more than a dozen executive exits at OpenAI so far this year, a list that has also included the company's chief revenue officer and its longest-serving chief operating officer.
Why it matters
OpenAI is in the middle of one of the largest infrastructure buildouts in the industry, and turnover at the top of that organization — coming alongside an internal reporting-line reshuffle — is a signal worth watching as the company scales compute ahead of a widely anticipated IPO. A reorganized infrastructure org and a new reporting structure under Sachin Katti suggest OpenAI is still tuning how it manages data center strategy even as the scale of its commitments keeps growing.
