Anthropic signs $10 billion, six-year compute deal with Nvidia-backed startup Volta Infra
Anthropic has signed a $10 billion, six-year deal for cloud computing capacity with Volta Infra Holdings, an AI infrastructure startup that did not exist six months ago, as the Claude maker continues an aggressive push to lock down compute ahead of rising demand.
What's new
Under the agreement, Volta will supply Anthropic with dedicated compute from a data center site in Norway with 133 megawatts of capacity, built around Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin chips. TechCrunch, which first reported the deal, quotes the arrangement directly: "Volta, founded earlier this year, will provide cloud compute to the Claude maker over a six-year period," and "that facility will be located in Norway and will deliver a 133 megawatt capacity."
Volta is not an independent GPU buyer — it operates as part of Nvidia's Cloud Partner program, "a consortium of AI cloud providers that use Nvidia's GPUs in their data centers," according to the report. The Norway facility itself is reported to be developed in partnership with Bitdeer Technologies Group, a bitcoin-mining company that has been converting crypto data center capacity into AI infrastructure, with delivery split into two phases targeting activation in late 2026 and early 2027.
Volta was founded in January 2026 by former Brookfield Asset Management executives and has been valued at roughly $2.4 billion following a $300 million seed and Series A round, with investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter, Azora, and Nvidia itself.
Context
The Volta agreement is the latest in a string of compute deals Anthropic has struck this year as it races to secure capacity independent of any single cloud provider. The company has previously announced arrangements with SpaceX (using Colossus 1 capacity in Memphis), AMD (a multi-gigawatt GPU deployment), Google, and Amazon, among others. As TechCrunch put it, "Anthropic has sought to aggressively expand its compute capacity over the last several months as it wages a corporate battle with its competitors."
The deal also underscores how quickly new entrants are being pulled into frontier AI's infrastructure buildout: Volta had no track record six months ago and is now underwriting a $10 billion commitment from one of the largest model developers, backed in part by Nvidia's own capital and GPU allocation.
Why it matters
Compute has become the binding constraint on how fast frontier labs can train and serve models, and Anthropic's response has been to diversify aggressively across chip vendors, cloud partners, and now single-purpose startups rather than depend on hyperscaler capacity alone. Locking in dedicated capacity years in advance, at gigawatt-adjacent scale, is a hedge against both GPU scarcity and pricing power sitting with a handful of large cloud vendors.
For Nvidia, the deal is also a proof point for its Cloud Partner program: financing and backing smaller, purpose-built infrastructure operators like Volta creates additional buyers for Vera Rubin chips beyond the traditional hyperscalers, while giving labs like Anthropic more counterparties to negotiate with. Whether newly formed infrastructure companies like Volta can reliably deliver gigawatt-scale, multi-year commitments is the open question the next two delivery phases — targeted for December 2026 and March 2027 — will begin to answer.
