Anthropic opens Milan office as its sixth European base

Listen

Anthropic opened an office in Milan on May 27, 2026, adding Italy to a European footprint that now spans London, Dublin, Paris, Zurich, and Munich. The local team is led by Thomas Remy, Anthropic's Head of Southern Europe, and is already working with named Italian enterprises in finance, life sciences, energy, and automotive sectors.

What's new

Anthropic says the Milan office is its sixth in Europe. Per the company, the team is already engaged with Generali Group and Unipol Group in finance, Angelini Pharma and Bracco Group in life sciences, Enel Group in energy, and Pirelli in automotive. Anthropic also disclosed a deployment partnership with JAKALA covering more than 3,000 seats, which the company claims freed roughly 70 percent of senior team time for higher-judgment client work. Italian fintech Satispay, which Anthropic describes as serving more than six million users, deployed Claude across its engineering teams and "compressed an 18-month roadmap into seven months," according to the announcement.

Chris Ciauri, MD International at Anthropic, framed the launch this way in the post: "We are here to support Italian enterprise, Italian research, and Italian culture through a safe AI transition."

Context

The Milan opening lands inside a steady cadence of international expansion for Anthropic. In the same week the company also disclosed plans to open a Seoul office and named KiYoung Choi as Representative Director of Korea, and earlier in May the company confidentially submitted an S-1 draft to the SEC. Anthropic's last major fundraise was a $65B Series H at a $965B post-money valuation announced on May 28, 2026 — capital that is visibly being deployed into go-to-market presence in markets where Claude already has strong organic enterprise pull.

Why it matters

The named customer roster is the most concrete part of this announcement and is what makes Milan more than a pin on a map. Generali, Enel, and Pirelli are flagship Italian incumbents, and Satispay is a category-defining domestic fintech — landing all of them in a single announcement signals that Anthropic's European enterprise motion is no longer just London and Paris. The JAKALA seat-count is also notable: 3,000 seats at a single regional integrator is enterprise-scale, not a pilot. For the broader market, the move tightens the European frontier-model competition with OpenAI, Mistral (locally based in Paris), and Google as Italian regulated industries pick standards-grade AI partners under the EU AI Act regime.
