Anthropic opens 10,000 free and discounted Claude seats for scientists

Anthropic is opening 10,000 seats for scientists around the world to access Claude subscriptions for free or at a discounted rate for one year, through a new Claude team plan built specifically for research labs.

What's new

The plan has two tiers: standard seats are free, and premium seats with 5x usage limits are available for $15 per month. To qualify, a researcher must be a principal investigator or equivalent at an academic or nonprofit research institution; once verified, that PI can add the other researchers in their lab to the plan.

Anthropic says the 10,000-seat pool is a starting point, not a ceiling: the company intends to extend the program well beyond that initial allocation over the coming months as demand is validated.

The plan builds on two things Anthropic already had in place for researchers:

• Claude Science, launched in June, which integrates the tools researchers commonly use, produces auditable artifacts from Claude's work, and provides flexible access to computing resources.
• The AI for Science program, which hands out free credits to researchers on high-impact projects and is now being broadened beyond biological sciences to cover compute-heavy research more generally.

Context

Academic and nonprofit research labs are usually the last to get discounted access to frontier AI tools — grant cycles move slowly, and per-seat commercial pricing is a real barrier for labs running on public or foundation funding. Anthropic's free/discounted structure, gated on PI verification rather than a sales process, is designed to remove that friction directly rather than relying on one-off institutional deals.

It also follows a broader pattern this year of frontier labs courting the scientific community specifically: cheap or free compute and model access is now a recruiting tool for get ting research groups standardized on one company's stack early, well before those labs are purchasing at commercial scale.

Why it matters

Free, verified access to a premium model tier changes the economics for labs that would otherwise ration AI usage, or skip it entirely, on cost grounds. Pairing the offer with Claude Science and the AI for Science credits program suggests Anthropic wants scientific research to be a proving ground for Claude — a place where auditable, high-stakes technical work happens in public, ahead of the Model Hardware Standard research preview Anthropic announced the same week, which pushes Claude agents further into direct control of lab equipment. Together, they read as a coordinated bet that the next visible wins for frontier AI show up in labs, not just chat interfaces.
