Anthropic merges Claude Cowork into chat, launches Claude Docs and Claude Slides

Anthropic is collapsing Claude Cowork and its standard chat interface into a single product, while simultaneously launching Claude Docs and Claude Slides — built-in document and presentation creation tools that put Claude in direct competition with Google Docs and Microsoft Office's AI features.

What's new

Anthropic states the merge plainly: "Starting today, Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude." Previously, Cowork's agentic, multi-step task capabilities lived in a separate surface from ordinary conversation; now they're available from any chat. Alongside the merge, two new products launched: "Claude Docs and Claude Slides are new today, and Claude Design now works inside your conversations too." Users can ask Claude for a document and co-write it together, or ask for a presentation and have Claude draft the slides — with direct editing, in-app presenting, or export to PowerPoint or PDF.

The rollout is staged: "This is rolling out to Pro and Max plans first, in the Claude app on web, desktop, and mobile over the coming weeks," with broader plan availability, including Enterprise, to follow — Enterprise admins get to choose when to turn the features on for their organizations. All three surfaces (Cowork, Docs, Slides) launch in beta on paid plans.

Context

Cowork launched as Anthropic's answer to agentic, multi-step work — the kind of task that goes beyond a single chat reply. But splitting it from ordinary chat meant users had to consciously choose which mode they needed before starting. Folding it into chat removes that decision: Claude determines what a task requires and pulls in the right capabilities, skills, and connectors regardless of where the conversation started.

Docs and Slides put Anthropic squarely into the productivity-suite race that Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are all running simultaneously — each trying to make their chatbot the place knowledge work actually happens, rather than a tool that hands off to Word or Google Docs. Anthropic had already been building toward this with Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint webinars aimed at enterprise workflows; Docs and Slides extend the same ambition to the core Claude app.

Why it matters

The interface merge matters as much as the new products: Anthropic is betting that most people don't want to pick a mode before they start working, they want the assistant to figure out the right level of effort itself. That's a UX bet other labs are making too, but Anthropic's version ties it directly to native document creation, which raises the stakes — Claude now needs to be good enough at drafting and formatting real documents and slide decks to justify replacing the incumbent tools most enterprise users already have open. If it lands, it strengthens Claude's push into enterprise seats where Cowork already has traction; if the document quality falls short of Google's or Microsoft's tools, it risks looking like a checkbox feature rather than a genuine alternative.
