Anthropic data: Australia ranks 7th in per-capita Claude usage, not the global leader some outlets reported

Anthropic's latest Economic Index research pinpoints exactly where Australia sits in global Claude usage — and it's more nuanced than the "Australia is #1" framing some outlets ran with: high per-capita adoption, but not the largest user base in raw terms.

Anthropic's own research post states the baseline figure plainly: "Australia accounts for 1.6% of global Claude.ai traffic, ranking eleventh among all countries in our February 2026 sample." That raw share, however, undersells the country's intensity of use relative to its size. As Anthropic puts it, "Its Anthropic AI Usage Index (AUI) is 4.1, which means Australians use Claude over four times more than its working-age population would predict. This places Australia among the highest per capita adopters of Claude with ranking seventh behind Singapore, Israel, Luxembourg, Switzerland, the United States, and Canada."

Within the country, usage skews heavily toward two states: New South Wales and Victoria together account for the bulk of conversations (37% and 31% respectively, per Anthropic's data). Anthropic also measured how Australians work with Claude rather than just how much: the country's "AI autonomy" score comes in relatively low on a 1–5 scale, which Anthropic reads as users staying more hands-on — collaborating with Claude on a task rather than delegating it wholesale. Roughly 46% of Australian Claude conversations are work-related, with coursework and study support making up a further meaningful share of usage.

This is the latest release in Anthropic's recurring Economic Index series, which the company uses to track how Claude gets used across different populations, industries, and now countries. Anthropic frames the Australia report around the anniversary of the country's National AI Plan, using it as a hook to look at adoption patterns in detail — state-level concentration, work-versus-personal split, and how "hands-on" users are when they delegate tasks to the model. Several outlets covering the report, including Forbes Australia, described the country as the "world's biggest Claude user," a framing Anthropic's own numbers do not support: Australia ranks 11th by raw traffic share and 7th on the per-capita index, not first on either measure.
