Airbnb widens access to GPT-6 Astra and OpenAI's frontier models

Airbnb has signed a new agreement with OpenAI giving its engineering and product teams broader access to OpenAI's frontier models, including GPT-6 Astra, through OpenAI's own APIs and Amazon Bedrock.

What's new

Under the new agreement, announced September 23, 2026, Airbnb's development teams get expanded access to OpenAI's model lineup beyond their existing use of Codex. Airbnb engineers already run an internal AI assistant built on Codex and models including GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna for writing software and running remote coding agents; the new deal extends that access to GPT-6 Astra specifically.

OpenAI says Airbnb's early use of Astra has produced results beyond coding tasks: on one test involving strategic documents and other non-coding work, an Airbnb user reported reaching a strong output in three to four passes, versus more than 20 rounds needed with other models.

Airbnb CTO Ahmad Al-Dahle is quoted saying the company's "development teams are shipping roughly 80% more features than a year ago," crediting OpenAI's frontier models, including GPT-6 Astra, as "a key element" of that acceleration. OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Dali Rajic said the expanded access lets Airbnb "move from ideas to production faster."

Context

The deal builds on Airbnb's existing relationship with OpenAI around Codex-based developer tooling. It lands amid what OpenAI describes as accelerating enterprise adoption of GPT-6 Astra, following the efficiency gains the company touted for GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna.
